Best Basal Thermometer

A basal thermometer is a sensitive device designed for reading the small changes in temperature that occur over the course of a woman’s menstrual cycle. Basal thermometer comes in both mercury based glass thermometer as well as digital. Digital thermometer is better option as it reads the temperature more rapidly than mercury thermometers, often within 30 to 60 seconds.

What is Basal Body Temperature (BBT)

A basal body temperature (BBT) is the normal body temperature of a person at rest. It is the body temperature measured under the conditions, which is not influenced by food, drink or any activities. For optimum accuracy, basal temperature should be taken at the same time every morning upon waking. Women can track their BBT to find out when they are ovulating. With this time line, By taking basal temperature daily and charting it, a woman can learn when she is most or least likely to become pregnant.

Charting Your Basal Temperature

Before ovulation, a woman’s BBT averages between 36.1°C (97°F) and 36.4°C (97.5°F). After ovulation, it rises to 36.4°C (97.5°F) to 37°C (98.6°F). By charting your basal temperature daily, you can see a pattern and notice the changes that occur in every ovulation cycle. You can record your daily basal temperature on the enclosed charts. Take your temperature at the same time every day before getting out of bed. Keeping a charted record for at least three months will usually provide the information you need to determine your approximate day of ovulation during a regular menstrual cycle.

How to Take Accurate Basal Body Temperature

To obtain an accurate basal temperature, you must take your temperature when you first awake in the morning. For best results, this waking temperature should be taken at the same time each morning. Since any activity may tend to raise your temperature, do not get out of bed until you have taken your basal temperature. Postpone going to the bathroom, eating, smoking or drinking until after taking your basal temperature.

Places of Measurement

Since temperatures taken at different sites can vary, it is important to select one method and then take your temperature the same way everyday. You must use either the oral, vaginal or rectal method. Using more than one method will give inaccurate results.

  • Oral measurement is very comfortable but on account of differences of temperature in the individual parts under the tongue (lower in the front, higher in the back) it needs more precision and longer time, with closed mouth. It is recommended mainly women and girls who have reasons to avoid vaginal or rectal measurement.
  • Vaginal measurement On account of natural bacterial flora killing micro-organisms the thermometer doesn’t need any special hygienic treatment apart washing it in a warm water. Only fungal infections of the vagina may be a contraindication for this measurement.
  • Rectal measurement is the least comfortable but the most stable if we take the result into consideration. It needs to maintain hygiene and conduct disinfection of the thermometer as well as oiling the thermometer before taking measure.
